Benjamin Palmer papers, 1669-1817.

Papers, 1669-1817. They include papers relating to the affairs of William Barnes and his son, Underhill Barnes, who was the father-in-law of Benjamin Palmer, as well as Palmer's own papers. The collection contains deeds and other legal papers related to land tenure on City Island and in Westchester, as well as accounts, receipts, and other documents, which include two letters in which Palmer gives his views on the Constitution and on relations between the United States and Great Britain in 1798. Other major subjects in Palmer's papers include a proposal to build a bridge connecting City Island and Rodman's Neck; Palmer's attempts to be recompensed for building a free bridge over the Harlem River, in 1759, which was destroyed by the British during the Revolution; records of meetings of the proprietors of City Island; an inventory, dated 1773, detailing goods sold from the estate of Rebecca Palmer; and discussion of his expulsion from the island by the British during the Revolution, which gave rise to some legal disputes. Other miscellaneous papers include a lottery ticket.
